So a post about one of my favourite things was just about inevitable and here goes! There are some really wierd and interesting foods out here in Canada and Hawaii. I’ve tried a fair few of them (within the pescy categories of course!)

Corn meal is a breakfast cereal made like oatmeal (porridge) only out of corn, it tastes kinda bizarre and you really have to work to get the flavour into it, but you’d have it with salt and butter or sugar and butter, all pretty strange to me. It has the wierdest texture too, kinda like eating grains of sand, or small grains of quinoa. (This is somewhat similar to couscous only larger grains and is yummy!)

The popcorn is also pretty out there, you always typically put butter on it, but I’ve had it with yeast on top of that or you can get ranch flavouring, cheese, chilli, pretty much anything which is so so different I just can’t get used to it! Give me good old fashioned toffee butterkist anytime!!

In hawaii there’s so many different fruits, I don’t know if you saw the picture of my friend Mele at a fruit stall in the middle of Hana highway, but they’re all different colours shapes, sizes, and have different names to what we’d call them, so a passion fruit is called a Lilikoi. And a courgette is a zucchini. They also call sweet potatoes yams, because out here sweet potatoes are purple dry potatoes, we had some for Christmas dinner and they’re delicious, odd looking to put something purple in my mouth and it taste like potato but all really interesting!

Nuts and seeds are pretty big out here too, my friend Shalaleh taught me how to crack and eat sunflower seeds, and I’ve learned to like pistachios and other nuts, which is pretty cool cause the grocery stores typically have these large containers and you can put nuts in them at so much per lb and get them that way, in fact thats the way you typically pay for most fruit and vegetables, you pick them and pay per lb, rather than pre-packaged, pre-priced.

Victoria being so close to the sea also has a lot of different fish and crustaceans (though as I discovered eating an expensive oyster burger, they aren’t all deliciously well cooked!) which is awesome. tilapia is a common Uvic cafeteria fish, and salmon crops up a lot too which is cool because I LOVE salmon. Hahaa, also tried some white fish at my friend Anna’s house before she left to go to Exeter Uni in England! (Good luck Anna!!)

And in the States especially the portions really are huge in the fast food places, I asked for a small pepsi and got what I would think of as a large! And a small fries exactly the same! Live like a king on a kids meal!!

I’ve heard from a few friends travelling around that the states has some amazing food places, so hopefully I won’t get too fat in the summer, but try some seriously cool foods and be able to add to this list!!
